Living a dream as a WRC technician

Alongside his ICT engineering studies at TAMK, Kristian Karkulahti, 25, is living his dream as a World Rally Championship technician in the Toyota Rally Team in Puuppola, Jyväskylä.

Karkulahti started his motor sports career already at the age of 9 as a go-karts driver. In March 2016, he joined the electric department of Toyota Rally Team. As a technician, his main tasks are building up and maintaining Toyota Yaris WRC electrical systems. Together with his supervisors, he also takes care of work processes such as scheduling and prioritising tasks.

– To work at the top of motor sports is quite challenging. As a team member, you are required to endure stress. You have to minimise mistakes, solve problems and react to everything quickly and accurately, says Karkulahti.

Apart from factory working, Karkulahti travels with the team in international WRC racing events. During rally weeks, he is in charge of spare parts and electrical maintenance. Rally service breaks are intense and there is no room for mistakes. In spite of a hectic job profile, Karkulahti feels he is in the right field.

– All my experiences are positive and I still learn new things every day. Working with the top professionals has really added to my skills. Now I am living my dream, and maybe someday we will have a chance to win the world championship!
